There aren’t many reasons why we wouldn’t want to have a vegetable garden and show it off to the world. Not only does it look cool, but it demonstrates an appreciation for local food and an excitement for growing fresh veggies. In our limited space, we have corn, pumpkins, chives and sunflowers (representing two of the three “sister crops” of the South West).  As well as being lovely and making us smile,  in a couple weeks those vegetables will be ready to enjoy in some tacos, on some pasta, mixed into scrambled eggs, or whatever we fancy. It is interesting gardening in an arid climate like ours. It makes us more aware of the weather patterns, the evaporation levels, best times for watering, and the land in general. Landscaping in a desert can be a challenge, but we had a good ol’ time hauling in smooth river rocks to create a no-water-required xeriscape look for the front of The Motor Lodge. We all need some green though, so why not make it edible?!

Who you callin’ yeller?! http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/26-07-2010/wild-west-at-its-best/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/26-07-2010/wild-west-at-its-best/#comments Mon, 26 Jul 2010 19:36:04 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=517 Did you hear the gunfire on Cortez Street? Have you seen the people who look like time travelers from the old west? Well, a couple of times each summer in downtown Prescott there are “Wild West Shootouts”. One of them happened to be yesterday.  Sure, we have our share of cowboys and “urban” cowboys that wear their western duds on a regular basis.  However,  during these festivals there is an outrageous increase in number of  chaps, corsets, ten-gallon hats, parasols, and waist-coats appearing on and around the Courthouse Square. Some folks really go for it and transform their personas. You may overhear conversations about livestock, hay bales and outlaws. So why not take it all of the way  with  gunslingers and shootouts?!  Next time you hear gunshots at The Square,  grab your petticoat and/or spurs (depending on how you roll!) and git along on down to the Courthouse. We think it is best enjoyed with some black coffee, cornbread and beans.

So, what is up with hotels and their Cancellation Policies? http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/26-07-2010/cancellation-policy/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/26-07-2010/cancellation-policy/#comments Mon, 26 Jul 2010 05:09:43 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=510 We understand that schedules may collide at the  last minute; you come down with the flu,  a forgotten dinner with your in-laws,  a desperate call from work  or you simply “get a better offer”! It happens to all of us.  So, did you ever wonder why hotels are such sticklers with regard to their cancellation policy?  Well, allow me to enlighten you.

You see, when someone makes a reservation, we take their comfy room out of our inventory and hold it just for them. Once we are completely booked we have to say “sorry” to other travelers that are looking for a room. As a date approaches most people have already secured an alternative (albeit,  not as “cool” as The Motor Lodge) hotel reservation.  So, when  a person calls to cancel their reservation at the last minute it is possible, and has happened often, that we are left with an empty room.  Sure, there may be those that “fly-by the seat-of -their-pants” and prefer to just show-up as “walk-ins” that may fill the room,  however,  we can’t be assured of that.  We have had empty rooms on busy holiday weekends after having previously turned away many potential guests due to a the last minute “no-show”.

We have tried to be lenient,  trusting that people would be honest and not try to pull one over on us, but “ouch!” it sure hurts to get burned.  We once had a cancellation from a guy that had “just lost his job”.  We wished him well and didn’t enforce our cancellation policy only to find out later that he had actually decided to extend a Hawaiian vacation at the last minute. There have been other examples; the woman that called at noon to let me know she was sick on the day of her arrival only to find out about some last minute concert tickets that she acquired (be careful what you tell your friends who keep their reservations!); and the woman that, when I called to check on her “very sick daughter”, apparently having forgotten her reason for canceling,  had forgotten  about her daughters “sickness” the previous day. It is not unusual for some people to make multiple reservations  while trying to decide what will best suit their needs.  Some people think that if  they are going be charged anyway, that they can come on a different day and not have to pay.  Sorry, that is not how it works. You see, then we are holding a room for two nights for you at the price of one.

At The Motor Lodge, we ask that you let us know at least 72 hours in advance of your earliest check-in if you aren’t able to keep your reservation in order to not be charged.  If we can fill the room, even if you are in the 72 hour window, we will not charge you (although most places will…ain’t we sweet?!). Because last minute cancellations have such an impact on  a small place like ours and we have been burned multiple times we will be enforcing our cancellation policy.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

Coals in the sky http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/25-07-2010/coals-in-the-sky/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/25-07-2010/coals-in-the-sky/#comments Sun, 25 Jul 2010 08:27:18 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=513 Today was busy. Today was actually crazy busy. Breakfast at the Dinner Bell, ALWAYS a good start with a Southwest Omelet (delish!). Anyhow, went on lots of errands, creative and boring (from fabric to contact paper). Got a tad behind on laundry (then caught-up).  Then had to decide between all the exciting events going on in town this evening. A final high school band show, benefit show, all the hubub at the square, and several shows only heard about in passing. While trying to decide where to go, what to do, the incredible sunset shone over Thumb Butte. Vibrant and pink, we’re convinced it is coals left over from the hot days. So this is why this blog is terribly late. Hope you found plenty of entertainment on this fine Prescottonian evening.

Say “YES” to bicycles http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/22-07-2010/say-yes-to-bicycles/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/22-07-2010/say-yes-to-bicycles/#comments Thu, 22 Jul 2010 23:42:56 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=507 Prescott is a small town but on these hot days all walking distances seem much, much greater. It’s a conundrum because who wants to get into their hot and sticky car only to burn their hands on the steering wheel and nearly suffocate while getting the key in the ignition? We sure don’t. We know that there is a better alternative… Hop on a bicycle!  As soon as you feel the wind on your face, you will have a hard time turning back. Whether you are riding down Montezuma from The Motor Lodge to The Square or on one of our many mountain trails (we have 450 mile of them), you will come home feeling refreshed and accomplished. Probably a little hot and sweaty but thats just a good excuse to drink some more ice cold lemonade (or a beer if you fancy).

If you are planning on staying with us at The Motor Lodge, feel no need to transport all your wheels, as we have a great selection of vintage and newer bikes for your cruising convenience. There are even a couple of tandems so you can share your happiness (or test your relationship)with your sweetheart or a friend. Not only will you look cool but you will get everywhere in a quarter of the time and get some exercise! Let’s just face it, bikes are the coolest.

Sunflower Forest http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/20-07-2010/501/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/20-07-2010/501/#comments Wed, 21 Jul 2010 02:59:40 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=501 These scalding summer days make it hard to believe that anything will grow in our soil. This makes it all the more exciting when hardy plants are able to soak up what little water there is and completely thrive. Some of these plants are truly incredible. The Helianthus Annuus is an annual plant, native to Central and North America, that follows the sun through the sky, and is probably on a mug you own. You guessed it, we’re talking about sunflowers. It is currently prime sunflower season, although they haven’t reached their peak. There are several native sunflowers that are in bloom in late July and during the month of August.

Sunflowers tend to impact people more than other flowers. Perhaps it is their height that makes us feel humble and happy or their joyful, summery appearance. Or it could be their love of the sun, that we definitely can relate to.  People have used sunflowers as symbols for several causes. From the Vegan Society to the Aesthetic Movement. These flowers embody a lot.

So, if you love sunflowers like we do, we’ll let you in on a Prescott area secret. If you go down to skull valley in the next couple of weeks, past the general store and tasty breakfast place, you will see the most outrageous fields of thick and vibrant flowers. You can’t walk through them they are so dense (and we have tried). They are an absolute treat, a sunflower forest. Not much else can make you feel THAT good.

Crafty possibilities http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/19-07-2010/crafty-possibilities/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/19-07-2010/crafty-possibilities/#comments Mon, 19 Jul 2010 22:19:50 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=491 Some summer days we feel like drinking lemonade and not much else, but today it is pleasantly overcast with an occasional drizzle and we are feeling crafty. Yes, there are usually more popular fall and winter crafts (who wants to quilt in 95 degree heat?), but these long days should be taken advantage of. Paint the bright flowers blooming in your front yard. Try that lacy knitting pattern that isn’t as useful when it is snowing. Or paint your mailbox in the bright colors it deserves. Or sew something cute out of all those leftover fabric scraps (everyone likes a patchwork coyote toy).

If you still feel the impending sun and heat, then make yourself some homemade popsicle ice cubes! Cut up all that delicious summer fruit that desperately needs to be eaten, put some in an ice cube tray, and pour some fruit juice over it. Freeze as long as it takes, and then enjoy them in a cold glass of sparkling water, tap water, or more juice! Yumm, gotta go, there are so many crafts to be done.

105 years old and lookin’ good http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/18-07-2010/487/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/18-07-2010/487/#comments Mon, 19 Jul 2010 04:12:58 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=487 In 1905, seven years before Arizona became a state, Prescott was already a social center of the Southwest. Embodying the social culture of the time, the Elks Opera House had its grand opening. 105 years later, a second unveiling of this historical building is taking place. The Elks has gone through many developments in the century it has been in use. Starting as a hotspot for theater, silent films, and orchestras, it developed into more of a cinema when “talkie” films were created just before the 1930’s. Films continued to be a main entertainment attraction for The Elks throughout the 70’s, but in the 80’s, a preference for theater resurfaced.

A couple of years ago, there was a total mixed bag of events going on at The Elks Theater. From local youth plays, to showing Casa Blanca (and other classic films), to being avery occasional music venue. This was around the time when the copper Elk (named “Bill”… who knew?) was returned to his original place atop the theater. Bill had been removed in 1971 and was staying at the Elks Club until 2006 when it was decided that Bill should be the symbol of The Elks that he once was.

Most recently, the community came together with a vision to restore The Elks Opera House to its original glamour , and the beautiful space is being unveiled yet again. Look on The Elks website for tickets to all the upcoming events (including the Prescott Film Festival, a Steel Drum Band, and lots of independent theater). Don’t forget your bow tie  and opera glasses!

Cheap and Cheerful http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/17-07-2010/483/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/17-07-2010/483/#comments Sun, 18 Jul 2010 00:05:37 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=483 Tomorrow is Sunday, which might mean that it is the one day of the week you really feel like going out and quite often your favorite spots are closed. Yes, it happens to us too. Sundays are good for some things though… if you are looking for some unpredictable shopping, it is the perfect day to go scouting for yard sales. Simply follow the cardboard signs. If you drive around in the downtown area, there are bound to be arrows leading you on a treasure hunt for cheap and cheerful goods. Yard sales aren’t the best place to go looking for something specific, but you almost always come home happy with an old radio, VHS tape, mismatched mugs, or a wicker basket for picnicking. And, yes, these objects are entirely essential.

Even if you don’t find anything, it is stil fun to see what people are getting rid of and the people who can’t live without their treaures. Before you know it the morning will have passed, and some delicious breakfast places are waiting to feed you. We are sure you will find something fun to do in the afternoon. Perhaps you can play with the hulahoops and yoyos you got at the yard sales.

Black holes, scorpions, and tea kettles. http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/16-07-2010/black-holes-scorpions-and-tea-kettles/ http://www.themotorlodge.com/prescott-arizona-motel/16-07-2010/black-holes-scorpions-and-tea-kettles/#comments Fri, 16 Jul 2010 20:43:12 +0000 clair3 http://www.themotorlodge.com/?p=469 When the warm evenings turn into nights, and the afternoon clouds disappear from the sky, the bright constellations of the Southwest appear. The stars are best visible when you get out of town a bit (take a drive down to Skull Valley or up to Thumb Butte for great viewing). Yet, even if you stay downtown, the most vivid constellations are visible with the naked eye, and are a definite treat. In the mid July sky, the most quintessential constellations are Scorpius (the scorpion) and Sagittarius (the centaur archer who looks like a teapot)scorpius-constellation-3. In order to find these, you can just walk outside the motor lodge, and look to the south. Scorpius is easiest to spot due to the star Antares which is bright and stands out as it appears tinted yellowish orange. Antares is very close to the head of the scorpion (see picture). You will follow a path of stars down from Antares and curling to the left to find the tail.

If you are able to navigate to the tip of the Scorpius tail, you should be able to follow those stars slightly to the upper left to find the triangle at the front of Sagittarius. If you are looking at Sagittarius as a teapot (which we really like to do), then the triangle you have found is the spout of the teapot and the squarish body follows to the left of it. If you want, you can also follow a longer line of stars on the left side to see the body of the centaur.

The most unusual thing about these two constellations, is when you stare directly between the spout of Sagittarius and the tail of Scorpius, you are staring at the black hole in the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. That is probably the most extreme thing you will ever be able to find between a Scorpion and a Tea Kettle. So whether you want to bring some blankets and take a short, after dark trip out of town, or if you just want to walk outside in your slippers, go impress your friends with your new, fascinating night sky knowledge.
